Take a moment to look around you in the room and find something you haven’t noticed before. A light fixture, a loose screw, something on the floor.

Becoming aware of the here and now pulls you out of autopilot and gives you a chance to pause and decide what to do next. Just making the conscious decision to do something is likely to help you focus on the things that are important instead of just urgent or easy.

This awareness is something you can train your brain to do better by practicing in your daily life. If you want to seriously buff up your awareness, then the equivalent of hitting the gym is formal mindfulness practice.
